Description Reporting to the Deputy Director, incumbent is responsible for administering diversion, courts, intake, specialized program, and pre-adjudication probation services. Ensures that personnel are properly trained and available at all times to assist courts in probation matters. Coordinates with other Deputy Assistant Directors and unit supervisors to plan and direct department activities focused on accomplishing mission goals and objectives. Develops and implements procedures to ensure compliance with TJJD standards and department policies and procedures.

  1. Provides inservice training for diversion, court intake, detention intake, and victim services program supervisors and staff.
  2. Oversees the assignment of cases referred to the Department including detention intake, court intake, drug court, and victims services.
  3. Researches and assists in writing and developing programs, requests for proposals, and operating procedures to efficiently meet service demands.
  4. Conducts audits and reviews the progress of all assigned areas.
  5. Ensures that necessary data are collected and monthly statistical reports are prepared for assigned areas.
  6. Ensures that supervisory and probation staff are trained to prepare cases and related information for court.
  7. Serves as a liaison between Juvenile Services and the courts, District Attorney, social service agencies, law enforcement agencies, schools, and other professional institutions and organizations.
  8. Evaluates supervisors and formulates plans for performance improvement for all personnel directly supervised.
  9. Provides leadership and guidance in the development and implementation of formal policies and procedures for the effective and efficient operation of assigned programs.
  10. Coordinates the transfer of youth committed to the Texas Juvenile Justice Department, youth certified as adults to the County jail, and youth transferred by bench warrant for court hearings. Ensures required documentation is completed and accompanies youth.
  11. Participates in departmental policy and budget development process through membership in the executive leadership team.
  12. Provides coverage and ancillary support for staff absences.
  13. Assists in the absence of the Deputy Director and represents the department at presentations, meetings, and on committees.
  14. Performs all other related duties involved in the operation of Juvenile Services as assigned or required.
  • Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred.
  • Five (5) full-time years of work experience in a related field and three (3) full-time years supervisory work experience in a related field required.
  • Experience in planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating activities and personnel required.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department and possess a valid driver's license.
  • Knowledge of Texas Juvenile Justice Code, Texas Juvenile Justice Department Standards, departmental policies and procedures, and personnel guidelines.
  • Knowledge of and ability to effectively assess needs of juvenile population and determine appropriate intervention.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
