An Overview

An Inmate Classification Manager plans, organizes, and directs daily operations of the Inmate Classification section at the William G. Truesdale Detention Center. The incumbent is responsible for coordinating internal services and resources, developing operational policies and procedures, and meeting with local, state, federal, and non-profit organizations to establish relationships that foster rapport and benefit the inmate population by increasing services. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for monitoring changes in the jail population and developing a plan of action to address overcrowding and housing.

What You Should Bring

The incumbent should possess thorough knowledge of the criminal justice system’s operations, including applicable federal, state, and city codes, as well as departmental general orders and standard operating procedures. This includes knowledge and experience in law enforcement programs, intake, classification, record keeping, information dissemination, alternatives to incarceration, pretrial services, release and treatment programs, and financial account management.

A strong understanding of office management practices is essential, including the use of automated systems for data recording and communication. The incumbent should demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to influence others to perform with a high level of accuracy and precision. They must be capable of quickly analyzing complex problems and identifying practical solutions, performing mathematical computations, and interpreting statistical reports. The role requires the ability to work effectively in a high-stress, potentially dangerous environment and to supervise a small team.

The Opportunity

  • Monitors inmate population trends and fluctuations, adjusting staff deployment accordingly, providing direct support during high-demand periods and coordinating staff activities.
  • Monitors workload and classification decisions, including the approval of exceptions; conducts daily briefings and takes follow-up action on notable cases.
  • Coordinates jail resources and reviews complex cases with staff, offering recommendations for more effective inmate management and housing.
  • Handles issues raised by difficult inmates that the Unit Counselor was unable to resolve, including meeting directly with inmates who request supervisory intervention.
  • Collaborates with department heads to develop protocols and guidelines that balance inmate needs with security requirements.
  • Maintains daily activity report by documenting, reporting and analyzing statistical data related to daily intake and outtake levels; identifies workload impacts on detention center operations.
  • Remains informed on trends and developments in correction and inmate management; reports and implements beneficial initiatives.
  • Meets with outside agencies to build relationships and establish rapport, enhancing services available to the inmate population.
  • Facilitate staff meetings, professional development, and staff training to enhance team performance and knowledge.
  • Provides employee counseling, implements disciplinary actions as appropriate, and delivers commendations for exemplary performance.
  • Evaluates employee performance and prepares formal performance evaluations.
  • Leads roll call training covering standard operating procedures, along with ongoing refresher topics, and awareness and preventative initiatives.
  • Conducts monthly file audits and counselor case management reviews to evaluate accuracy, quality, and workload.
  • Provides solutions and recommendations to improve workflow and work processes.
  • Collaborates with the IT department to improve the user-friendliness of the Office management system.
  • Attends Command Staff review meetings to stay informed on Office issues, concerns, and changes.
  • Attends regional jail meetings to receive updates or amendments to selection criteria.
  • Prepares accreditation files and necessary documentation.
  • Performs related work as required.
About the Office

The Alexandria Sheriff's Office is responsible for the operation of the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center, security of the Alexandria Courthouse, service of court legal documents, execution of court orders, transportation of prisoners, and general public safety and law enforcement. The Alexandria Sheriff's Office is a highly professional organization with a combined staff of 203, including sworn deputy sheriffs and civilian personnel. The Office is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Commission on Accreditation for Corrections, and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. The Office has been honored by the National Sheriff's Association with the prestigious "Triple Crown Award" for achieving these accreditations. The Office is also Virginia State certified by the Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Department of Corrections.

Four-Year College Degree; five years of work experience in corrections in a client-oriented service such as classification, inmate assessment, counseling, or similar operations in a criminal justice or human service-related field; completion of college-level courses in law enforcement criminal justice, corrections or related course work; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Four-Year College Degree in criminal justice or related field plus two years of managerial or supervisory experience; knowledge of criminal justice system, intake, record keeping, dissemination of information, alternatives to incarceration, pretrial services, release, treatment programs; skill in oral and written communication; ability to supervise staff of eight and influence others to perform and analyze problems and find workable solutions and ability to work effectively in highly stressful and potentially dangerous work environment.

This position requires a polygraph exam, drug screening, and local and federal criminal history checks as part of the applicant background investigation.
