Description This position is responsible assisting the Dallas County Attorney’s Office with the investigation and/or prosecution of crimes committed in Dallas County.
  • Assist in the Investigation of matters being investigated or prosecuted by the Dallas County Attorney's Office.
  • Interview witnesses, victims and other persons with knowledge of matters being investigated or prosecuted.
  • Assist in locating victims and witnesses through social media, Government databases, court filings and human sources, etc.
  • Locate and interview suspected persons, witnesses, employers, representatives of business and governmental organizations and other individuals, and evaluates their testimony.
  • Analyzes, summarizes, and presents findings of investigations to the District Attorney for the purpose of filing criminal complaints.
  • Gathers, preserves and reports facts, statements or affidavits and other evidence for use in criminal prosecution.
  • Coordinate and communicate with assigned prosecutor as to case status and next steps.
  • Prepare and serve various criminal process documents, including search warrants, county attorney subpoenas, arrest warrants, subpoenas, no contact orders and other court documents.
  • Obtain items of evidence: photos, video, physical evidence, etc.
  • Conducts surveillance activities, including “Cold Calls.”
  • Develop and maintain evidence tracking, chain of custody and storage procedures. Secure, store, log and track items of received evidence.
  • Appears in court as required.
  • Assist in preparing items of evidence for submission as an Exhibit at trial. Editing of audio/video evidence for use as Exhibits.
  • Performs routine administrative and clerical work as required, including but not limited to typing or word processing reports and correspondence, compiling data for reports, entering, and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, sending and receiving faxes, etc.
  • Collaborates with other local and state agencies to locate suspects, witnesses, or other pertinent persons or items of evidentiary value.
  • Coordinates and communicate with other law enforcement agencies and personnel regarding matters being investigated and prosecuted.
  • Attend relevant and pertinent training.
  • Performs related duties.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Associate’s Degree in criminal justice, human services, or a related field.
  • Two to three years of prior law enforcement or investigation experience.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain State of Iowa Driver License.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of legal process, criminal process, court process, pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, ordinances and regulations.
  • Skill in understanding, interpreting, and applying pertinent federal, state, and local laws, rules and regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Iowa criminal codes and statutes.
  • Knowledge of interviewing and investigation techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of, and familiarity with, sources of information used in locating suspects and witnesses.
  • Skill in tactfully and effectively interacting with the public and with others contacted in the course of work, including hostile or antagonistic individuals.
  • Ability to work under stressful or dangerous conditions and to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice process, civil law and court procedures.
  • Skill in prioritizing, planning, taking initiative and working independently.
  • Skill in meeting internal and external deadlines.
  • Skill in critical and strategic thinking.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in creating a quality and accurate work product in a timely manner.
  • Skill in effective, professional, tactful and confident oral and written communication.
  • Skill in operating computers and job-related software programs such as audio/video creation, storage and editing software: Snagit, Audacity, etc.
  • Skill in Microsoft Office and Adobe programs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and distinguishes between shades of color.
  • The work is typically performed in an office.
