The City of Norcross is looking for a Part-time Police Officer. The purpose of this position is to protect life and property and enforce federal and state laws and local ordinances. Successful performance contributes to the safety and well-being of citizens and promotes the efficient and effective operation of the department.

The incumbent in this position will handle routine, emergency, and/or complex situations within the police department. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: conducting preliminary and/or follow up investigations, and work independently in performing regularly assigned duties under the general orders of a Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain or Chief.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides security for the City of Norcross Municipal Court.
  • Provides security for Mayor and Council meetings.
  • Completes bank deposit transports and jail bond pickups.
  • Assists with hit and run follow-up investigations.
  • Assists with school zone speed detection review/approval process.
  • Assists with false alarm violation enforcement.
  • Provides first aid and CPR to victims as necessary.
  • Testifies in judicial proceedings.
  • Completes all required reports and forms.
  • Inspects and maintains an assigned patrol car and uniform.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED and one to two years of experience. Associate’s degree preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth in the Georgia Mandate Law Enforcement Training Act.
  • Must hold or have the ability to obtain a Peace Officer's Standards and Training Act certification and have the ability to become GCIC certified.
  • Must be able to work same schedule as City Court and Mayor/Council Meetings.
  • Proven ability to effectively and professionally respond to crisis and other emergency situations.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Any other duties as assigned by Chief, Captain, Lieutenant or Sergeant.

Scope and Impact:

Job has recurring work situations involving high degrees of discretion. The need for accuracy and effective utilization of accepted programs and routines is high. Errors in judgment will waste resources and adversely impact performance. Incumbent operates independently but work is verified. Content of work priorities are determined by supervision.

Communications/Customer Contact:

Contacts are typically with co-workers, members of the court system, attorneys, judges, medical personnel, members of the general public, and law enforcement officers from other agencies.

Contacts are typically to exchange information, provide services, justify matters, interview persons, and resolve problems.

  • Skill in the use of firearms, communications equipment, self-defense techniques, and other standard and specialized law enforcement equipment.

  • Skill in observing and preserving evidence.
  • Oral communication skills; able to testify in court.
  • Skill in report writing and the preparation of police related documents and reports.
  • Ability to restrain persons without causing physical harm.

  • Incumbents may be subjected to fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, extreme stress, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, travel, blood, and bodily fluids.
  • The work may require the use of protective equipment such as masks or gloves.
