Description This position is responsible for communication work in the operation of a public safety radio system, computer aided dispatch system and associated equipment.
Operates communication equipment to provide prompt and effective responses to calls for service in both routine and emergency situations.

Receives and transmits radio messages.

Dispatches police units in accordance with standardized procedures.

Receives telephone calls and walk-in complaints/service requests.

Operates Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer terminals to transmit and receive messages to and from other jurisdictions.

Participates in warrant control operations, tow operations, and entries into the records management system.

Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to high school graduation or possession of a G.E.D. issued by a state department of education.

Within a specified time period, must satisfactory completion of a prescribed training program in basic communications (if not already completed).

Must successfully pass the following requirements: polygraph examination, psychological examination, and background investigation.

Must have never committed, been involved in, or been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.

United States citizenship is required.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must be able to perform essential job functions, such as hearing and speaking clearly.

Ability to operate computers.

Must be able to handle the multi-tasking duties of a call-taker or dispatcher in a small dispatch environment.

Must be able to complete NCIC/VCIN entries with minimum errors.

Additional Desirable Qualification:

Prior Police dispatching experience.

Should possess a strong work ethic and the ability to work in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment.

Excellent decision making, resource allocation, prioritizing and deployment skills.

Must be able to speak clearly and distinctly, to remain calm under emergency and/or stressful conditions, handle multiple tasks at once and to be effective in dealing with the public.
Flexible hours that may include days, nights, weekends and holidays based on need of the agency.

Position is considered Temporary and will not be able to work twelve months consecutively.

Permitted to work up to 1559 hours in a fiscal year and not more than 40 hours per week.
