Description

This entry level position reports to the Police Sergeant as assigned and assists certified officers, code enforcement, communications and crime scene personnel with various public service and other routine tasks. Participates in special programs and projects as assigned.

  • Responds to non-emergency situations, including traffic collisions, delayed thefts, criminal mischief, animal complaints, missing person searches, etc.
  • Directs traffic as needed. Enforces parking regulations and issues citations as appropriate. Assists in processing crime scenes. Assists with code enforcement duties. Attends court sessions and depositions as necessary.
  • Receives and responds to citizen inquiries, complaints and requests for assistance; refers public to persons or agencies which can provide further assistance as required.
  • Assists sergeant with the training and coordination of the school crossing guard program.
  • Promotes favorable public relations and police/community relations through personal contact with community residents, civic organizations, community/government agencies, social agencies, schools and representatives of business/industry.
  • Participates in various public education/safety programs as assigned.
  • Performs general clerical work as required, including typing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, etc.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Remains abreast of all federal and state laws, and ordinances of the city of Miramar. Attends required training and continuing education classes.
  • Prepares and submits various records and reports including crash reports, citations, incident reports, property reports, narratives, tow sheets, property receipts, vehicle checklists, vehicle repair requests, various other logs, reports, memos, etc.
  • Operates a vehicle; operates a two-way radio, computer, typewriter, copier, telephone, calculator, etc. Exercises care and safety in the use of equipment required to complete assigned tasks.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, Police Chief, other department supervisors and employees, other City personnel, court personnel, other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, emergency response personnel, community leaders and organizations, and the general public.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent; or any equivalent combination of training, education and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and experience.
  • Must be able to obtain a valid state driver's license.

  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding, consideration, and respect of cultural, religious, and gender differences when interacting with the general public and colleagues.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work requires the ability to exert minimal but not constant physical effort to performs light work, typically involving some combination of balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, walking and may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 25 pounds), visual perception and discrimination, the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, perceive and discriminate color, perceive odors, and require oral communications.
