Description Under general supervision, is responsible for enforcing all law, rules, and regulations of the College, County, and state to ensure campus security and public safety at Pitt Community College. Works under stressful, high-risk conditions. Reports to the Chief of Public Safety.

Enforces all rules, regulations, and laws on the campus. Performs investigations of incidents and any criminal activity that occur; detains suspects and makes arrests as appropriate.

Assists outside law enforcement agencies as needed.

Serves as witness and provides evidence in court as required.

Responds to individuals needing assistance in emergency situations. Assists motorists with a variety of services including unlocking cars, jump-starting cars, etc. Responds to sick or injured persons and renders first-aid as needed.

Enforces campus traffic and parking regulations. Issues traffic warnings and citations to violators as appropriate.

Assists the PCC staff in unlocking classrooms and work areas as needed. Secures all doors at the end of the day. Assists with the opening and closing of buildings for special activities.

Provides security and law enforcement services during registration, graduation, and other special events.

Works under stressful, high-risk conditions.

Maintains required level of proficiency in the use of firearms. Maintains weapons and equipment in functional and presentable condition.

Assists students and staff with concerns such as domestic violence, etc. Must be able to assist and guide victims as to resources available.

Gives talks and demonstrations on safety and law enforcement issues.

Receives and/or reviews various records and reports including inquiries, issues, records, reports, correspondence, memos, etc.

Prepares and submits a variety of documents and reports including daily activity log, incident report, criminal offense report, week-end logs, etc.

Refers to policy and procedure manuals, computer manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.

Operates a patrol vehicle and utilizes a variety of office and law enforcement equipment including computer, typewriter, handgun, handcuffs, baton, mace, etc.

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals including immediate supervisor, co-workers, staff, and the general public.

Assists with parking and security arrangements for special activities on and off campus.

Provides escort services to personnel traveling to and from the bank, and to students and staff on campus when requested.

Performs other related duties as required.

An associate degree in criminal justice or a related area and four to six years of law enforcement experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities. Must meet all requirements of the North Carolina Law Enforcement Training and Standards Commission in areas such as physical requirements, educational requirements, and skills requirements. Must have a valid NC driver's license.

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle as well as a variety of types of office and other equipment including computer, two-way radio, firearms, etc. Must be physically able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally and/or frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work; position requires seizing, holding, grasping, etc. and involves walking, standing, reaching, stooping, crouching, etc. for brief periods of time. Must be able to physically defend one's self from attack or assault. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of approximately one hundred pounds. Must be able to lift a human body if the need arises.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes the receiving of information and instructions from supervisor.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read and comprehend a variety of documents and reports. Requires the ability to prepare various documents and reports such as incident reports, daily activity reports, criminal offense report, etc., using the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, and using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to communicate with co-workers, other law enforcement agencies, students, PCC staff and faculty, and the general public, etc. with poise, voice control, and confidence.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems such as law enforcement, etc., in order to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information and to follow verbal and written instructions.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and determine percentages; and determine time and weight.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in utilizing office and other equipment. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination and Visual Acuity: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, night vision, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under high stress when confronted with an emergency.

Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)

Knowledge of Job: Has thorough knowledge of the methods, policies, and procedures of the Administrative Services Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Police Officer II. Has proficient knowledge of the policies, procedures, and methods of the Division. Has extensive knowledge of the State, local, and College laws, regulations, and ordinances as they pertain to the specific responsibilities of the position. Is able to maintain control in various situations wherein danger is present. Has knowledge and practices proper arrest procedures. Is able to develop and maintain effective communications and relationships with all departments and agencies involved in the activities of the job. Is skilled in the use of firearms and motor vehicles, their maintenance and safety practices. Has knowledge of how to operate various types of equipment as required in the completion of daily activities. Is able to perform duties necessary to promote the safety and welfare of all persons on campus. Has the knowledge and ability to implement emergency procedures. Is able to react quickly and calmly in dangerous and emergency situations. Has good knowledge of first aid methods and techniques. Has thorough knowledge of the layout of the campus. Has the knowledge and ability to implement campus traffic and parking regulations. Is able to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information. Is able to deal courteously, yet firmly and effectively with students, staff, and the public in emergency situations. Is able to use independent judgment in a wide array of circumstances from routine tasks to extremely critical situations. Is able to work under stressful, high-risk conditions. Is able to observe situations analytically and objectively, and to respond and record them clearly and accurately on incident reports and report them clearly and accurately in court as required.

Quality of Work: Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interaction with all College departments and divisions, co-workers and the public.

Implements work activity in accordance with priorities and estimated schedules.

Safety and Housekeeping: Adheres to all safety and housekeeping standards established by the College and various regulatory agencies. Sees that the standards are not violated. Maintains a clean and orderly workplace. Is able to work under stressful, high-risk conditions.
