The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (Academy) is seeking a Public Information Officer. Provide information to the news media or other requests as appropriate through the FOIA process as required. When assigned, coordinates special events that occur on the Academy property working closely with outside entities request for Academy access and/or Academy resources. In this capacity, maintains open lines of communication with Academy staff and management to mitigate any scheduling conflicts or issues. Keeps the Director and/or Deputy Director informed and updated on issues or events that impact the Academy.

  • Receives and answers request for information from news media outlets or other law enforcement agencies as required, keeping the Director and/or the Deputy Director informed of all requests.
  • Routes special request for information which involve legal issues through the Academy's legal counsel for review before releasing any information.
  • Coordinates with the Director's office for any request for interviews from the news media for the Academy.
  • Coordinates with outside agencies or entities requesting the use of Academy resources for special events. Functions as the liaison for these events aiding and assisting the requesting entity with their request.
  • Oversees the Academy's Facebook Page for content and usage.
  • Coordinating with other administrative staff ensures that the reception area is adequately covered during work time.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
A bachelor's degree and prior experience as a Public Information Officer for a law enforcement agency, law enforcement experience, and organizational skills focused on event coordination and execution. Must be a certified Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer.
