Description

The Report Specialist performs non-commissioned intermediate-level work for the Police Department, obtaining information from the public to complete incident reports in situations that do not require a police officer to respond. The Report Specialist collects evidence and property, prepares reports and documents, and will not have physical contact with suspects/arrestees.

Salary Range: $26.78 - $36.24/hour

Hiring salary is $26.78/hour (Level 1 of the Step Plan) for incumbents who meet minimum qualifications and do not have previous direct experience in this position. Report Specialist experience may be considered for laterals on a year for year basis.
  • Completes incident reports and interviews victims of property crimes, such as burglaries, motor vehicle thefts, criminal mischief, lost/stolen or found property, and similar. May be completed with or without an officer’s assistance, and may include making recommendation of case status or for further investigator follow-up.
  • Conducts necessary follow up investigations for accidents, online reporting, in-person crime reporting.
  • Conducts basic crime scene investigations such as fingerprint dusting, DNA collection, as well as the collection and/or preservation of digital evidence.
  • Completes investigative paperwork, electronic reports, and police reports as assigned. Completes forms and reports in a clear, complete, and accurate manner.
  • Works in various databases, some of which are secure/law enforcement sensitive and require CJIS security protocols.
  • Attends shift/unit meetings, seminars, and training sessions to remain knowledgeable of operations and promote job performance.
  • Contacts persons needing to make non-investigative crime reports as assigned by a supervisor.
  • Develops effective customer relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Recognizes the roles and services of each City department to make appropriate referrals.
  • Responds to questions and complaints from staff and community members in a clear and concise manner.
  • Modifies work methods to meet changing priorities.

Education

  • High School Diploma/GED - required
  • College coursework in Criminal Justice - preferred
  • Spanish language fluency or American Sign Language skills - preferred

Experience

  • 2 years of experience in a public-facing office or administrative environment - required.
  • Experience with law enforcement practices, investigative techniques, criminal law, and operations of outside agencies - preferred.
  • Experience in a police or sheriff’s department - preferred.

Or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the Necessary Applicant Traits.

Necessary Special Requirements

New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: oral board, reference checks, background checks including local police check and sex-offender registry, drug screen, CVSA/polygraph, medical/vision examination, psychological examination, and fingerprint checks through CBI/FBI.

  • Cannot have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor involving dishonesty, or conduct that would compromise the integrity of the department.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with the ability to obtain a valid Colorado driver’s license and safe driving record for continued employment.
  • Work is generally scheduled Monday-Friday with some weekend and holiday work required.
  • This position is based in the office and requires regular on-site attendance; remote or virtual work is not available.
  • Occasional squatting, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching overhead and below shoulder level and twisting.
  • Physical demands are described as sedentary (exert up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Involves being stationary most of the time but may involve moving or standing for brief periods of time).
  • Work is performed indoors with occasional exposure to outdoors.
  • In-person meetings required with the public and employees.
  • The employee may be exposed to graphic content, including images and videos depicting death, severe injuries, explicit language, nudity, and other sensitive material.
