The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Sheriff's Evidence Specialist to work in the Crime Laboratory Unit located at the Forensic Science Building in downtown Minneapolis. The Hennepin County Sheriff's Crime Laboratory is an accredited crime laboratory that provides forensic services to 35 law enforcement agencies, the Minnesota State Patrol, and multiple federal law enforcement agencies.

Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at The Hennepin County Sheriff's Forensic Science Laboratory, 531 Park Avenue South Minneapolis, MN 55415 and remote as job duties require. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, with typical hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin. New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

In this position, you will:- Receive and release evidence/property submitted to the laboratory and review submission paperwork to ensure proper packaging and labeling.
- Enter information into Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and process and upload digital crime scene photographs.
- Manage the secure storage of evidence/property submitted to the laboratory and perform safety checks on weapons.
- Maintain the chain of custody on evidence/property submitted to the laboratory and route evidence to the appropriate laboratory section for examination and analysis.
- Provide evidence handling and preservation consultation to law enforcement personnel who submit evidence/property to the laboratory.
- Coordinate and implement the destruction of analyzed evidence and testify in court regarding evidence handling and chain of custody procedures.
Need to have:
- One of the following:
- Two years or more of college or vocational-technical course work in a law enforcement or criminal justice program.
- Completion of 13 or more semester (20 quarter) college credits in anatomy, biology, chemistry, physiology, or a closely related field.
- Current or prior licensure as a peace officer.
- Note: Experience inventorying or accounting for inmate property or police evidence may be substituted for education on a year for year basis.
- Ability to bend, climb, stretch, and lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Nice to have:- Experience:
- Using computer software such as Microsoft Office, LIMS, Records Management System (RMS), and specialized evidence management and inventory programs.
- With the judicial system processes pertaining to evidence in criminal court.
- Testifying in court.
- Managing an inventory of objects including the receipt, storage, and release of these objects.
- Ability to:
- Manage multiple evidence storage locations and adapt to frequently changing priorities.
- Recognize and respond positively and respectfully to the needs of diverse customers including law enforcement professionals, other laboratory personnel, court personnel, and the general public.
- Work independently with minimal direction.
- Handle evidence packaging containing narcotics, weapons, biological materials, and other hazardous items.
- Make presentations in a formal court setting regarding evidence handling procedures.
