WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

This position is part of the Division of Alaska Wildlife Troopers. The Public Safety Technician 1/2 Flex performs technical level work in the prevention and detection of violations and the enforcement of laws and regulations. In addition, this position performs semi-skilled work, frequently in remote field locations, to ensure that mobile facilities and transportation equipment are operational, and assists Troopers with surveillance and patrol duties, evidence handling and preservation.

THE WORKING CONDITIONS YOU CAN EXPECT:

As a Public Safety Technician, 1/2 Flex you will have the opportunity to work in varying outdoor environmental conditions as well as some time spent in an office setting. You will be performing semi-skilled work, frequently in field locations, to ensure that mobile facilities and transportation equipment are operational. You will also help with equipment inventory and perform general clerical duties as needed.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:
  • Set up camp independently in a wilderness situation.
  • Experience using hazardous equipment, such as firearms, chain saws, etc.
  • Experience operating boats more than 24 feet in length.
  • Ability to perform general building maintenance, to include plumbing, electrical and carpentry repairs; and
  • Ability to spend long periods of time in close quarters while at sea on vessels between29-156 feet in length.

Public Safety Technician 1 Minimum Qualifications (Range 9)
Eighteen years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED at the time of employment.

Special Note:
Must have a current, valid Alaska Driver's License at time of employment.

Job duties require lifting and carrying of loads weighing up to 70 pounds over rough or uneven surfaces. As a condition of employment, the Department of Public Safety will require a physical examination to determine the ability to meet the physical demands of the job.

A background investigation, including a criminal record check for conviction of felony or misdemeanor crimes, will be made.

Most positions are seasonal and may require work in remote sites where employees may quarter in bunkhouses, vessels, or tents.

Employees must be available for recall to testify in court during the off season; if this occurs they will be compensated.

Public Safety Technician 2 Minimum Qualifications (Range 11)
Must be eighteen years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED at time of employment.
AND
Six months of experience performing patrol and surveillance duties and identifying, recording violations, and documenting criminal activity. This work experience is met by service as a Public Safety Technician 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
Six months of field experience involving fish or wildlife management, habitat protection. This experience includes work such as a Fish and Wildlife Technician with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
Six months of experience as a commercial fisher; licensed hunting or registered sport fishing guide; or assistant, deckhand, or similar person who worked directly under the supervision of, and on the same vessel/hunting trip as, a licensed or registered guide.
OR
Six months of qualifying military experience that involved working outdoors in inclement weather conditions, and patrolling and surveillance duties.
OR
Six months of experience performing semi-skilled duties working in and/or around aircraft. This experience includes work such as general labor and maintenance of aircraft equipment and/or facilities; cleaning, washing, and/or assisting with fueling aircraft to return to field; or other support tasks.

Special Note:
Must possess a current, valid Alaska Driver's license at time of employment.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This vacancy may be filled at either the I or II level depending on the applicant's training and/or experience.
