The Louisiana State Penitentiary is currently seeking a motivated and detail-oriented professional to serve as a Corrections Lieutenant, a key leadership role within the institution. This position is critical to maintaining effective prison operations within a secure correctional environment while ensuring strong employee relations, policy compliance, and workforce development.

As one of Louisiana’s largest correctional institutions, Louisiana State Penitentiary relies on experienced leaders who can support staff and uphold the highest standards of professionalism, accountability, and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and a commitment to supporting the men and women who work to maintain safety and order within the facility.

Two years of experience in a correctional, behavioral, or penal institution with responsibility for the security, custody, rehabilitation, or classification of offenders, or in law enforcement or security plus one of the following:

1. Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR
2. One year of experience in any field; OR
3. Six months of law enforcement experience as a POST certified peace officer.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Possession of a current driver's license.

Job Duties:
  • Responsible for training Dorm Officers and Officers in all assigned areas in regards to inmate posted policies, employee post orders and Department Regulations and Institutional Policies.
  • Will also provide training in the proper usage of security equipment such as key control, beeper, restraints, etc. and how to perform a proper shakedown of inmates and inmate’s property including bed areas and dorm areas.
  • Supervise and train subordinates on proper count procedure and assist/perform counts at designated times.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all posts in area of supervision have been relieved and that an officer is present at each post.

Work Environment:

  • Work with adult male inmates of all custody levels – minimum, medium, maximum (death row) and protective custody.
  • Will supervise maximum-security inmates and lower level security officers.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: Promotion of a permanent, classified employee of LA DPS&C - CORRECTIONS SERVICES (Adult DOC)

  • The selected employee may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted, or may be required to accept a probational appointment.

Compensation: This position has a Special Entrance Rate (SER) of $23.03 per hour.

This position also offers premium pay at a rate between $1.00 and $2.00 an hour for each regular hour worked, based on years of service with DOC, in addition to regular pay.

    • This is a 24 hour facility.
