Description The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (Academy), Police Science Unit is currently seeking an instructor. The instructor will function under general supervision and perform daily duties to support the operation of the unit. Duties include the following:

Duties include:

  • Develops and updates lesson plans, researches curriculum and teaches content in the Basic Training/Police Science Unit.
  • Conducts and coordinates classroom training as primary and back-up instructor for the Police Science Unit in Basic Law Enforcement training and some advanced training. Serves as a primary or backup for other assigned classes as needed.
  • Serves as a primary instructor for BLE Practical Problems training.
  • Prepares and updates student material. Maintains currency and accuracy of existing program in assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Researches curriculum content to maintain currency and relevancy of training material. Ensures current training materials support the necessary job specific knowledge, skills and ability associated with the specific program task analysis.
  • Enforces student discipline.
  • Performs law enforcement duties during times of critical incidents, whether natural or man-made crisis events requiring law enforcement response.
    Required to do "ride alongs" and assists other law enforcement agencies (i.e., state, local, city, county, etc.) in times of need or as required.
Salary:
  • The hiring salary starts at $60,696 and may increase with LEO instructional experience.
Minimum requirements:
  • High school diploma/GED and eight (8) years of law enforcement experience or
  • Associate's degree and six (6) years of law enforcement experience or
  • Bachelor’s degree and four (4) years of law enforcement experience and
  • Experience must include two (2) years of road experience and
  • Currently certified S.C. Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) or
  • Currently certified LEO in another ***jurisdiction with full powers of arrest with the ability to become an S.C. LEO.
  • Must be able to work some nights and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to obtain a Class B CDL with passenger and air brake endorsements.

We prefer that you currently possess the following:

  • Two (2) years of experience writing lesson plans and/or developing training material.
  • Basic Instructor Development (BID)
  • Active Shooter Training
  • Investigative Experience

About You:

  • Considerable knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices; modern police practices, techniques, tactics and methods.
  • Extensive knowledge of investigations practices.
  • Skill to research and develop comprehensive lesson plans in assigned training areas.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly and effectively; analyze problems and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Able to coordinate the work of students/others.
  • Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with fellow employees, supervisors, students and agency representatives.
  • Able to works under limited supervision using independent discretion and judgement.
  • Responsible for managing, directing and controlling all training delivery in assigned areas of instruction.
  • Maintain good physical condition to facilitate ability to conduct demonstrations and work in practical problems training area.
  • Available to work some nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Must acquire/maintain a valid SC CDL license as required for student bus transport.
