The Behavioral Health Co-Responder responds to behavioral health emergency calls for service with law enforcement personnel to provide community-based mental health interventions on-scene. This position uses skills to de-escalate and intervene in moments of crisis, ascertains if mental health, substance abuse, or other psycho-social stressors are a contributing factor in the crisis, and then conducts crisis stabilization, risk assessment, and follow-up with appropriate documentation to circumvent arrests and prevent repeat mental health calls for service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responds to behavioral health and crisis-related service calls with law enforcement personnel in various high-risk settings within the community;
  • Provides brief on-scene behavioral health strategies and interventions, especially during crisis situations or traumatic events, where stabilization is appropriate and recovery plans and referrals are recommended, consistent with the identified needs of the persons involved;
  • Follows direction from the partnering law enforcement staff regarding on-scene safety and security measures and protocols;
  • Provides behavioral health consultation to law enforcement staff while responding to health-related calls;
  • Provides in-person and telephonic crisis intervention as appropriate, depending on environment and safety factors;
  • Intervenes with persons experiencing a mental health episode, suicidal thoughts, plans, or intents, and/or needing risk assessment to assist and carry out problem identification, crisis interventions, psycho-education, referrals, and resource links;
  • Performs crisis stabilization to ensure the safety and success of continuity of care; advocates for individuals’ needs;
  • Communicates relevant information to individuals, families, and other stakeholders as appropriate;
  • Prepares petitions for involuntary transition to appropriate level of care as necessary, including mental health committals;
  • Collaborates and builds relationships with other law enforcement agencies, organizations, and family members to facilitate referrals for community-based services and treatment;

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, or closely related field from an accredited program, and completion of direct client contact and supervision hours necessary to achieve independent licensure with the Arizona State Board of Behavioral Health Examiners; and
  • Two years of post-graduate behavioral health and human service experience in crisis counseling, verbal de-escalation, working with diverse and at-risk populations, community networking, and resource delivery; or
  • Other combinations of education or experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Valid unrestricted license as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in the State of Arizona;
  • Must obtain CPR and First Aid certification within 90 days;
  • Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license or have the ability to obtain one by the time of hire.

Special Requirement: Because of the confidential, sensitive nature of information handled, successful completion of an extensive background investigation and polygraph is required.

This position is an At-Will position and is FLSA Exempt – ineligible for overtime compensation.

The starting pay for this position will be dependent upon the qualifications of experience and education.
