Description

The Anaheim Police Department is accepting applications for a Detention Facility Assistant to maintain records, type complaints, accept bail, assist the public and be called upon to assist in booking and caring for arrestees/inmates, as required.

Only female applicants will be considered for this recruitment per staffing requirements of the Board of State and Community Corrections Standards for Local Detention Facilities (See Title 15-Crime Prevention and Corrections Division 1, Chapter 1, Subchapter 4, Article 3, § 1027).

The ideal candidate will have at least two years of police records experience, excellent customer service skills, attention to detail, experience working with arrestees and/or inmates in a confined environment.

The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Receive and process bookings including running record checks on each arrestee.

Complete bail release information and maintain bail receipt log.

Type complaints on all misdemeanor filings.

Complete Orange County Jail transfer forms when sending arrestees to the County facility.

Prepare court paperwork on all in-custodies.

May assist in training new Detention Facility Assistants on detention facility procedures.

Performs the following as necessary due to understaffing of Detention Officers:

(Female arrestees and the female section of the detention facility require the use of females to perform following duties).

Receive and physically search arrestees in accordance with State and local instructions; escort to cells, visitor’s booths or interview rooms.

Make periodic safety checks of the detention facility.

Care for arrestees by serving meals and providing showers.

Monitor arrestee’s behavior using the closed circuit television (T.V.).

Observe while arrestees are being finger printed and photographed.

Assist the public and department personnel over the counter and on the phone, answering questions about bail and or release.

Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.


Experience
: Journey-level experience performing varied police record keeping and other clerical work to include some processing and care of arrestees and/or inmates.

Knowledge of: Modern office equipment and procedures; filing procedures; proper English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; police office procedures; basic math; telephone procedures; laws and procedures associated with the processing and care of arrestees and/or inmates; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Ability to: Perform varied clerical functions; prepare clear and accurate court paperwork; type accurate and complete complaints on misdemeanor filings; work with automated police records management systems to file and retrieve information; operate a teletype and interpret information; operate various office equipment including a personal computer using a variety of software; understand police terminology and law enforcement codes; receive, process and book arrestees as required; search female arrestees/inmates; make safety checks of the female section of the Detention Facility and identify and report violations; provide care for female arrestees/inmates by serving meals and providing showers; monitor closed circuit T.V., recognize unusual behavior and take appropriate action; communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals, providing accurate information; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

NOTE: Must be available to work assigned shifts, which includes nights, weekends, and regularly scheduled holidays. All Anaheim employees must have successfully passed their initial probationary period.

Employees of the Anaheim Police Department must be permanent and fulltime residents of the State of California and live within a one hundred (100) mile radius of the City of Anaheim.

The selection process includes, but is not limited to, a skills assessment (i.e. written exam, typing, proofreading, etc.), oral interview, background investigation, polygraph examination, and a medical examination to include drug/alcohol screening.

The interview with the background investigator and completion of the background investigation will include, but is not limited to, verification and evaluation of any present and/or past use of drugs, driving and employment history.

Please review the following common disqualifiers. If any items listed pertain to you, you will be automatically disqualified in the background investigation. You may, at this time, want to screen yourself and withdraw prior to starting the recruitment process.
  • Any illegal use, sales, or possession of a drug classified as an opiate (heroin, opium, etc.) or PCP.
  • Any use of cocaine, methamphetamine, hallucinogens (GHB, MDMA/ecstasy, ketamine, etc.) within five years of date of application.
  • Any illegal use of anabolic steroids within three years of date of application.
  • A pattern or history of irresponsibility as evidenced by debt collections, civil judgments, failure to pay, late payments, etc.
  • Two or more at-fault traffic collisions within three years of the date of application.
  • Conviction of a hit-and run offense.
  • Any driver's license suspension within five years of date of application.
  • Conviction of a felony crime.
  • Conviction of any misdemeanor crime within five years of application.
  • Any conviction as an adult, of any misdemeanor crime involving domestic violence, sexual-related offenses or crimes against children.
  • Any conviction as an adult, of a theft or larceny crime.
The following may result in disqualification:
  • Use of cocaine, methamphetamine, hallucinogens (GHB, MDMA/ecstasy, ketamine, etc.) previous to five years of application.
  • Prior nitrous oxide use.
  • Illegal use of anabolic steroids previous to three years of application.
  • Illegal use of a hypodermic needle/ syringe.
  • A bankruptcy within the past three years of date of application.
  • More than one moving violation in the past 12 months, and/or three or more moving citations within the past three years, and/or five or more moving citations within the past five years of date of application.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a reference / background check (to include a conviction record) and pass a post-offer pre-employment medical examination (which will include a drug/alcohol screening).
