Lancaster County is part of the Charlotte MSA or metropolitan area with the northern border touching Mecklenburg County and the panhandle (Indian Land & Van Wyck) touching York County, SC & Union County, NC respectively. Partnered together with the incorporated Town of Van Wyck the panhandle consists of Indian Land and the Town of Van Wyck which is also near the City of Rock Hill, Village of Marvin and Town of Waxhaw, NC. This area is growing exponentially and the economic growth has led to Lancaster County being in the top of county growths in the State of South Carolina. For 2024-2025 Lancaster County is projected to grow as the number one county in the state. The middle of the county is home for the City of Lancaster and the communities of Buford and Shiloh and Unity. This is also a small urban and rural area respectively. The southern part of the county is vast and has the towns of Heath Springs and Kershaw with one of the country's oldest and most successful gold mines along with a fish camp.
