Description A BSO application demonstrating the following must be completed and submitted to Human Resources by the listed closing date:

  1. Currently a Broward Sheriff's Office employee classified as a Detention Deputy in the Department of Detention.
  2. Successful completion of probationary period.
  3. Three (3) years of full-time paid experience as a BSO Detention Deputy in the Department of Detention.

EXAMINATION DESCRIPTION
The promotional process will consist of two testing components: a multiple-choice written exam and assessment exercises. The first component will be a written exam which will be based upon material outlined on the Reading List. Candidates who correctly answer 75% or more of the questions on the written exam will be invited to participate in the second component of the process, which will consist of assessment exercises.

An invitation to an orientation session will also be sent to the candidates who pass the written exam; however, attendance is optional.

Candidates who obtain at least a 75% in the assessment exercises will be placed on the eligibility list. Candidates must successfully pass both components of the promotional process to be placed on the eligibility list.

The written exam will comprise 50% of the final score and the assessment exercises will comprise 50% of the final score. Portions of the promotional process may be videotaped for scoring purposes and candidate feedback. The expected duration of the promotional process could last 6-8 weeks from the written test date.

To access the Reading List please visit the BSO Informant, select the DDCP tab (under Agency Services), and the reading list is available under "Reading Lists" on the right side of the page.This is supervisory work maintaining order and discipline among inmates in the Broward County Sheriff's Office Department of Detention. Work involves supervising deputies and subordinate personnel involving in the control of inmates; the enforcement of security rules, regulations and procedures; and the provision of services and information to inmates. Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a superior but exercise independent judgment in completing the work assignments. Work is reviewed through observation, reports and conferences.

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position.

Supervise the work of deputies and subordinate personnel involved in variety of correctional activities including security, contraband control, sanitation, laundry, the provision of medical, food, religious and recreational activities, visitation and other related functions.

Primary duties and responsibilities include the receipt and processing of inmates, the booking of inmates, attorney and bondsmen contacts, prisoner release, food delivery, cell assignment and security of correctional facility operations.

Reviews reports prepared by subordinates; prepares reports concerning security problems and work incidents; makes recommendations regarding changes in security and operational policy and procedures.

Investigate inmate complaints and unusual incidents to determine causes and identify problems.

Supervises the transporting of inmates; maintains order and discipline among all phases of correction operations and judicial processes; makes duty assignments and inspects inmate activities.

Maintains overall supervisory responsibility for the successful completion of assigned duties delegated to subordinate personnel.

Performs supervisory duties, i.e., scheduling, allocating, assigning, recommends hire, transfer, discipline, promotion.

Conducts employee performance evaluations; promotes career development of subordinate personnel.

Ensures that subordinate personnel have the skills and knowledge necessary to execute investigations and operations in accordance with agency policies and procedures.

Approves leave requests, monitors overtime usage within their respective area of responsibility and takes action to minimize the unnecessary use of overtime funds.

Maintains appropriate staffing levels, time accountability and employee skill sets for the shift, through insightful and predictive scheduling of subordinate personnel.

Testifies in judicial proceedings.

Responds to inquiries regarding status of inmates, visiting procedures and other related detention facility procedures.

Operates an agency vehicle when appropriate to area of assignment.

While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

Performs related duties as directed.

Compliance with minimum training and standards of an accredited certification institution as set forth by the recommended FDLE guidelines and CJSTC. Tasks include a criticality component, in responding to crime scenes or other critical incidents, whereby incumbents are required to maintain physical abilities consistent with CJSTC standards in order to perform essential duties as outlined herein on an as needed basis. Emphasis does not consider percentage (%) of time allocated to performing essential functions. Rather incumbents maintain CJSTC physical standards in order to perform essential functions at any point during compensatory time regardless of allocated percentage (%) of time to any one duty.

When call to assist in events, critical incidents, or emergencies, the following may apply:

Tasks involve the intermittent performance of extremely physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, climbing, and that may involve the dragging, pushing, and/or pulling of extremely heavy objects, such as in the event of chasing and subduing a detainee resisting control. Tasks may involve standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time. Some tasks are performed with potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements including, but not limited to, heat, humidity, inclement weather, loud noise, toxic/chemical agents, electrical currents, pathogens, violent behavior, weapons, explosives. Tasks include working around moving parts, vehicles, equipment, carts, and materials handling, where extremely heightened awareness to surroundings and environment is essential in the preservation of life and property. Standard body gear and equipment applies in the preservation of life and property, as does special equipment based on assignment including, but not limited to, various types of body armor and safety gear.
