The City of Wilmington is accepting applications for a Police Cadet. This is a non-sworn position working in the Wilmington Police Department with a flexible part-time schedule up to 28 hours per week.

The following forms must be completed and attached to the online application for consideration (NOTE: Please make sure appropriate notarization is obtained on the F-3 prior to submitting an application):

  1. North Carolina Personal History Statement (F3) - select "Police F3", select "Sign Up", complete online, print, & have notarized. (Attach full notarized document to the application)
  2. WPD Personal History Waiver - print and complete (handwritten signature required)
  3. WPD Credit Inquiry Waiver - print and complete (handwritten signature required)
  4. Criminal History Inquiry Waiver - print and complete (handwritten signature required)
  5. Driving History Inquiry Waiver - print and complete (handwritten signature required)
  6. Copy of Birth Certificate
  7. Copy of Official Transcript (seal not required)
    - High School - transcript only
    - GED - copy of final grade must be attached
    - College - transcript only

Note: Forms may be notarized in the Human Resources Department at no cost. The Human Resources office is located at 115 N. 3rd Street, Wilmington, NC (5th floor).

The following is a summary of steps in the selection process. Once an application packet is submitted to the City of Wilmington Human Resources Department, it will be forwarded to the Wilmington Police Department hiring manager. Each step must be successfully completed to advance to the next step in the process. In the event an applicant does not successfully complete any step of the application process, they must reapply whenever a new posting for a position is advertised. Please note the application process may take up to 3 months to complete:

Step 1: Completion of City of Wilmington Application and Wilmington PD Application Packet

Step 2: Preliminary Screening (against job qualifications)
Step 3: Interview Board
Step 4: Complete Background Investigation
**Step 5 is completed after a conditional job offer has been given.
Step 5: Medical/Drug Screening/Polygraph

Provide general customer service to citizens and perform administrative duties for the Police Department by processing paperwork, answering citizen questions in person and over the phone, managing the front desk, assisting walk-ins, retrieving and explaining reports to citizens, and filing paperwork. Other duties include sorting daily mail, training new cadets, assisting officers with reports, registering bicycles, signing in guests, and assisting other divisions within the Department as needed.

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be between the ages 18 and 25 years old
  • Possess or be eligible to obtain a NC Driver's License
  • Be a U. S. Citizen
  • Possess a High School diploma or GED
Applicants who are actively attending school while majoring in Criminal Justice or closely related field of study preferred.

Note: Must be willing to work days, nights, weekends and holidays. This position must also be able to work during periods of inclement weather or other emergencies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Exerting up to 10 lbs. occasionally or negligible weights frequently; sitting most of the time

WORKING CONDITIONS: This position generally requires work in an office setting
