General Definition of Work

Performs work answering emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching appropriate resources to calls, updates and maintains unit logs, running identification information through department database, and related work as apparent or assigned.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Communication Officer Supervisor.

 Essential Functions

  • Answers emergency and non-emergency calls for service and gives adequate instruction until either Fire, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), or Police can get there; types all prevalent information into system while talking to caller and waiting for first responders to arrive.
  • Operates radio systems to send units out while on emergency and non-emergency calls; uses radio system to check on first responder safety while on call and to relay information about call or subject they are with.
  • Operates MULES system to run people for driving and warrant status and vehicles for registration and stolen status; checks for stolen guns, marijuana cards, entering property as stolen, and entering people as missing and/or wanted.
  • Enters and updates warrants into MULES system, including wanted persons stolen vehicles.
  • All other duties as assigned.

 Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED required. 

 Special Qualifications

  • Obtain Missouri State Highway Patrol (MULES) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Certifications within six months of hire.
  • Complete 40 hours of basic telecommunicator training through an approved organization such as the Missouri Chapter of APCO within six months of hire.
  • Complete the Public Safety Telecommunicator Course through PowerPhone Inc. within six months of hire.
  • Obtain Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Certification through an approved organization such as the Missouri Chapter of Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) within six months of hire.
  • Obtain National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Certificationthrough Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) within six months of hire.
  • Receive Lexipol Policies Training through the Missouri Department of Public Safety within six months of hire.
