The 16th Circuit Public Defender Office provides legal representation for qualifying individuals charged with criminal offenses in York and Union County, S.C. We invite you to apply to join our team as Junior Investigator with The 16th Circuit Public Defender Office. The purpose of this position is to conduct thorough investigations of pending criminal activity committed in York County and other matters as assigned.
Compensation: Starting pay rate is $53,578.00 for this non-exempt position. Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (40 hours per week).

Duties and Responsibilities: - Assists in coordination and management of the initial intake process of all new public defender office clients via interviews at the jail.
- Reviews discovery materials to assist attorneys in case preparation.
- Locates and interviews witnesses.
- Maintains office records and detailed reports for future use.
- Records and documents oral statements given by witnesses.
- Interviews clients to gather the facts of their arrest.
- Creates, files, and serves subpoenas to obtain needed information for court cases, which requires the ability to operate a vehicle.
- Follows up interviews with clients and witnesses.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Experience and Education: - Bachelor’s Degree in Law, Criminal Justice or related degree preferred.
- Three (3) years of experience as an investigator, in law enforcement, military, or related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Certifications and Licenses: - Valid state driver’s license.
- Notary Public Commission.
