St. Louis County Department of Justice Services has an exciting opportunity to join their team as a Corrections Classification Specialist. This position will be responsible for the conduct classification of inmates pertaining to custody, special handling, housing and program participation.
The work schedule will consist of up to 10 hour shifts. The specific shift will be based on the needs of the facility. Possible shift schedules would include 7:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., 12:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m. The schedule may also include weekends and holidays. There will be a 10% shift differential applied to part of the 2nd shift and the 3rd shift.

Essential Function Examples
Conduct extensive screening interviews to classify inmates to appropriate custody levels, conduct suicide and mental health screenings, and refer to case management and other services.
Determine and address inmate safety issues on the basis of criminal history, records, affiliations, violence and Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) guidelines.
Produce and maintain inmate records within correctional systems to provide through documentation.
Collaborate with staff members of other departments and external agencies to obtain case information, monitor inmate movement, refer to programs and address problems.
Monitor inmates for reassignment of classification recommendation.

Schedule court appearances and related agencies interactions for required activities, outstanding fines, fees or warrants.
Perform other duties as required or assigned.
A bachelor’s degree with some related work experience in corrections, probation and parole, social work, criminal justice, psychology, and/or substance abuse/mental health treatment services. and one year of experience in inmate classification. Experience as a police or security office is not creditable. Candidates with an associate’s degree must have at least one year of inmate classification experience, or two years of corrections experience. Candidates with no degree must have at least four years of related work experience.
SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available.
The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.
The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.
All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.
