Overview
The Police Officer plays a crucial role in maintaining public safety and enforcing the law within the community. This position requires a dedicated individual who is committed to protecting lives and property, preventing crime, and ensuring the peace. Police Officers work collaboratively with community members and other law enforcement agencies to uphold justice while demonstrating integrity, respect, and professionalism.

If you enjoy making the most of your time off from work, you will love this job because you will have two weeks off for every two weeks you work. Imagine making a full-time salary ($73,216 - $80,080) and only working six months out of the year. Most people work a full year for one two-week vacation.

If you also love the outdoors, Kotzebue is about as remote as you can get in the USA and still consider yourself in civilization. Hunting, fishing, kayaking, hiking, and exploring wild Alaska are available on your time off.

There is no requirement to be an Alaska resident. Many of our Police Officers and Corrections Officers live in the lower 48 of the USA and commute to and from work.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol assigned areas to deter and detect criminal activity.
  • Respond promptly to emergency calls and incidents.
  • Conduct thorough criminal investigations, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.
  • Manage conflicts effectively, utilizing de-escalation techniques when necessary.
  • Prepare detailed reports documenting incidents, arrests, and investigations.
  • Enforce laws related to traffic, public safety, and criminal offenses.
  • Provide first aid assistance as needed during emergencies.
  • Engage with community members to build trust and foster positive relationships.
  • Handle animals in distress or involved in incidents, ensuring their safety and care.
  • Stay informed about immigration laws relevant to law enforcement duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in criminal justice or related field is preferred.
  • Must be 21 years of age, in good physical and mental condition, and with good, moral character.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Certification from a recognized police academy or training program is highly desirable.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Must display the ability to relate to the citizens, fellow workers, supervisors, and leaders of the community.
  • Must be able to exercise sound and reasonable judgment in everyday working decision-making.
  • Must have good written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in report writing with attention to detail.
  • Experience or training in conflict management techniques.
  • Knowledge of animal handling practices is a plus.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks associated with law enforcement duties.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and training.
  • Applicants will have an extensive background investigation, to include truth verification tests, psychological exam, and upon offer of employment, medical exam.
  • Applicants must meet any other minimal standards for police officer as set out in 13 AAC 85.010. 10.) Complete testing/assessment components as required.
  • Applicants that have a Basic Police Officer Certificate or higher from the Alaska Police Standards Council (APSC), or for out-of-state applicants who qualify for APSC wavier and reciprocity, will be considered at a higher rate of pay.
  • Agree to a three-year commitment to the City of Kotzebue.
  • Reliably commute on-time for each scheduled 2 week rotation.

Salary: $73,216.00 - $80,080.00 per year

Schedule: 12 hour rotating shifts
