The Police Explorer program is designed for young people interested in law enforcement and community service. The class concept usually revolves around providing practical knowledge and hands-on experience related to policing. Here's a breakdown of what it generally includes:
- Law Enforcement Fundamentals: This includes learning about the roles and responsibilities of police officers, the structure of law enforcement agencies, and the basics of criminal law and procedures.
- Practical Skills: Explorers often participate in training exercises that cover skills such as traffic control, crime scene management, self-defense, first aid, and emergency response.
- Ethics and Professionalism: Classes cover the ethical standards expected of law enforcement officers, including integrity, respect for the law, and the importance of community relations.

The overall goal is to give young people a realistic view of law enforcement, develop their skills and leadership abilities, and foster a positive relationship between them and their community.Explorer Duties include:
- Members will participate in bi-weekly meetings and training sessions.
- Members will engage in police Ride-A-Longs.
- Explorers will attend training seminars.
- Explorers will be responsible for Event Security.
- All members will operate under the supervision of Pinole Police Department Personnel.- Must be between ages 14-20
- Must be a U.S. citizen residing in Contra Costa County
- If still in High School, must maintain a "C" average or better.
- Physical fitness is required, with weight proportionate to height.
- Vision must be correctable to 20/30 in both eyes, with a minimum uncorrected vision of 20/100
- Hearing must be normal/unimpaired.
- Applicants must demonstrate good moral character, as felony convictions will disqualify.
- A background check is part of the process/required.
- Clear written and oral communication skills are essential.
- Commitment to a minimum of 10 hours per month to the Explorer Program is also required.
