Description
Hennepin County's Public Works department is hiring one or more Fleet Technicians to join the Fleet Services division. These positions will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and performing diagnostics on a variety of equipment. This includes hybrid, electric, gas cars and pickups, emergency vehicles and medium and heavy-duty gas or diesel trucks as well as construction equipment including loaders, graders and skid steers, trailers, small engines, and powersport equipment.
These positions are open to different levels of experience/qualifications and could be hired into the Fleet Technician, Junior or Fleet Technician, Senior level depending on the candidate.

Salary based upon qualifications:
Fleet Technician, Junior salary: $64,911.69 - $80,963.49 Annually
Fleet Technician, Senior salary: $72,997.57 - $89,262.25 Annually
Location and hours:
These positions are located at the Public Works Facility, 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, Minnesota 55340. There is no public transportation to this facility. These are second shift positions, with work hours being 2 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday. These positions require candidates to be available for on call duty after hours, weekends, and holidays.
New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

In addition to the base wage, there is a $.50/hour for a class A driver's license, $2.80/hour for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) master's in automotive or heavy truck, and $1.10 for the night shift differential pay.
In these positions, you will:
- Perform detailed preventive maintenance to complex systems by following manuals, established maintenance schedules, and procedures on small equipment, attachments, vehicles, and light duty trucks.
- Perform failure diagnosis and repairs to complex systems using, diagnostic equipment and procedures on medium duty trucks, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment.
- Perform emergency and planned field repairs.
- Perform pre-delivery and setup of new vehicles.
- Document and record all repairs using the fleet management information system.
- Perform mandatory regulated inspections, tests and operations to ensure safe and proper operation on all County vehicles, trucks and equipment.
- Use diagnostic scan tools related to light and heavy vehicles. For example, Snap-on Zeus, Mack/Volvo Tech-tool, Daimler DTNA/Diagnostic link 8, or International Navistar Engine Diagnostics (NED).
- Individuals hired at the Fleet Technician Junior level must demonstrate an ability to perform basic vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair under supervision, while building proficiency and competency with essential functions of the position through formal and informal training, and perform the duties listed above.
- Individuals hired at the Fleet Technician Senior level must demonstrate an ability to independently diagnose and repair more complex vehicle and equipment issues, provide guidance to less experienced technicians, and build advanced proficiency and competency with essential functions of the position through formal and informal training, and perform the duties listed above.
Need to have:
- For hire as Fleet Technician, Junior, one of the following:
- Completion of an approved two-year program in automotive service or medium and heavy truck service from an accredited technical school and one year of experience servicing automotive equipment.
- Related education and/or experience to total three years.
- For hire as Fleet Technician, Senior, one of the following:
- Completion of an approved two-year program in automotive service or medium and heavy truck service from an accredited technical school and three years of experience servicing automotive equipment.
- Related education and/or experience to total five years.
- Possession of four or more Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in either truck or automotive repair or the ability to obtain certifications within six months of employment.
- A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit and a valid Class B driver's license or ability to obtain within six months of employment.
- Note: The department provides the necessary training and support to meet this requirement.
- Ability to:
- Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Supply own full complement of mechanic tools.
Nice to have:
- Experience:
- Using diagnostic tools and software.
- Using Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Express, Excel, Teams and Word) and/or comparable programs.
- Servicing light and medium duty trucks, class 7 or 8 trucks, light and heavy-duty construction equipment, small engine equipment, snowmobiles, boats, and other recreational equipment.
- Using wire feed welders, stick welders, and acetylene torches.
- Servicing hydraulic systems.
- Diagnosing and repairing wiring, lighting, and onboard electronics.
- Using fleet maintenance software.
