This position provides work lead JYACAP teachers in the delivery of program curriculum. Provide management of the JYACAP offender program to ensure highly effective and efficient educational programs are delivered to students, life skills, cognitive education and CTE.Provide management and accountability of educational goals and programmatic guidelines. The position exists to meet and uphold the Mission, Vision, and Values of the Colorado Department of Corrections. This position encourages and promotes self-discipline, self-motivation, safe and productive work habits, and positive attitudes.

Job Duties:

  • Provide guidance and leadership to the education JYACAP staff in the preparation of teaching plans, instruction, and tutoring offender students, individually or in groups, in skills in an academic or vocational program by using instructional materials/media and tests;
  • Provide educational guidance and counseling to individual offenders through one-on-one interviews and referring students to program content;
  • Assist subordinate positions in ensuring student records are documented, reported, and distributed in a timely manner;
  • Instructs students in classroom settings, large and/or small group sessions, and individualized tutoring, in designated content areas to lead students toward achieving completion of Independent Living (financial literacy, life skills, communication, customer service, technology) based competencies;
  • Provide work lead over assigning tasks, monitoring progress work flow,checking the product and establish work standards;
  • Identifies approved curriculum to ensure program fidelity, responsivity factors, Develops lesson plans utilizing approved curriculum, materials, and strategies designed to improve student academic progression;
  • Conducts ongoing evaluation of the JYACAP program to ensure it is in alignments with the intent of the program and its metrics;
  • Collaborates with mental health staff, case management, custody and control, and other multidisciplinary staff to improve outcome opportunities and ensure successful completion rates for offender students;
  • Position will create a positive safe environment for learning by implementing facility policy and procedures to ensure safety and security through material and supply control, random searches of classrooms and pat searches of individual offenders if required;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Seven (7) years of full-time professional experience working directly with a hard to serve needs client population in a correctional or human services environment helping clients with barriers to employment by developing and implementing a specialized program, coordination of services, workforce development, AND identifying needs and referring to appropriate resources as your primary assignment. (Part-time experience will be prorated).

OR:

A combination of education from an accredited institution and/or relevant experience as defined above equal to seven (7) years. You must submit a copy of your unofficial transcripts with your name, college name, degree and date conferred in order to receive credit.

Professional work involves exercising discretion, analytical skill, judgment, and personal accountability and responsibility for creating, developing, integrating, applying, and sharing an organized body of knowledge that characteristically is: uniquely acquired through an intense education or training regimen at a recognized college or university; equivalent to the curriculum requirements for a bachelor's or higher degree with major study in or pertinent to the specialized field and continuously studied to explore, extend and use additional discoveries, interpretations, and application and to improve data, materials equipment, applications, and methods.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree or master's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology or similarly related field;
  • Experience working with offenders;
  • Thorough knowledge of Evidence Based Practices and Interventions for the successful re-entry of offenders;
  • Proven ability to provide efficient and effective service to hard to serve clients with medium/high risk needs;
  • Experience coordinating services with community resources;
  • Experience creating partnerships with others and work on common goals to set offender up for success;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office;
  • Experience in gathering, researching and reporting statistical data;
  • Experience interviewing and gathering information;
  • Experience interpreting complex rules, regulations, and standards and applying the knowledge to specific situations;
  • Experience giving presentations or training staff.

    • Successfully pass all modules of the six-week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics
    • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics
      • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist
      • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down
      • Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows
      • Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows
      • Swing a baton in a striking technique
      • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
      • Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions
    • Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment
    • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security
    • Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury
    • Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently
    • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations
    • Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner
    • Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders
    • Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments
    • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings
    • Willing and able to travel
    • Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule
    • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire
    • Successful completion of a background investigation is required. Should applicant’s background reveal criminal charges, it shall be the responsibility of the applicant to provide the Department of Corrections with written/official disposition of any charges.
    The CDOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. Employees (see exception below) may use marijuana in their personal time but are prohibited from working while under the influence of any substance, including marijuana. A drug test will be administered to all new employees; employees must successfully pass. Random drug screening will occur throughout employment.
    Exception: Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified employees are prohibited from the use of marijuana. Health care professionals must check their licensing requirements regarding marijuana use.
