Description POSITION SUMMARY:
Organizes and conducts training for all sheriff’s office employees. Has a working knowledge of patrol assignments, basic patrol investigations and report writing, surveillance, apprehensions, transporting of prisoners, testifying in court, and use of force. Has a working knowledge of basic jailer assignments, jail use of force, and the day-to-day operations of the MSO jail. Assists other divisions with training employees to include the Field Training and Jail Training required for new personnel and remedial training, and will be required to continuously train, educate, and create training for Training Officers on Patrol and in the Jail. Generates training statistics, assists in constructing policy updates, and communicates with other sheriff’s office divisions and law enforcement departments and coordinates training accordingly.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
General Duties
  • Provides the public in McLennan County with immediate response to emergencies and situations that require the presence of a peace officer.
  • Performspatroldutiesbypatrollingruralareas,ensuringbuildingsandresidences aresecureandassisting other departments and agencies asneeded.
  • Respondstoemergencycalls,suchasrobberies,burglaries,kidnappings,assaults,andmurders; andpractices safety procedures in answering and responding tocalls.
  • Enforces trafficlawsandarrestsorissuessummonstotrafficlawviolators;reports unsaferoadconditions;directsthe flow of traffic when required; investigates trafficaccidents.
  • Serveswarrants,capias,courtordersandotherlegalprocesses;locatesandarrestspersonswantedonwarrantsorcourtorders.
  • Protects the crime scene, gathers and preserves matters of evidence, takes and records testimony; directs and coordinates activities on-site until relieved by a superior officer; assists detectives inspecialized investigations.
  • Testifies in state, federal, and municipal courts concerning investigative workperformed.
  • Prepare and preserve evidence in accordance with directives to maintain chain ofcustody.
  • Conductsinvestigationsofcomplaints,crimes,anddisturbances;interviewswitnesses;interrogatessuspects; collects, preserves, and reports onevidence.
  • Prepares reports and keeps records of all activities in accordance with established policy andprocedures.
  • Assessessituations,securesscene,andrestoresorder including the use of restraintsandforcewhereappropriateupto and including deadlyforce.
  • Transports mentally ill patients to hospital and guards’ prisoners when needed.
  • Providesaccurateandclearlaw enforcementinformationtothepublic,securespeopleorproperty,participatesin community policing and awareness projects, conductspresentations.
Training Duties
  • Coordinate training by researching and developing programs, planning and scheduling training sessions, instructing classes, making records and reports, and coordinating with persons outside the department
  • Collaborate with other sheriff’s office divisions and participates in the daily activity of co-workers
  • Assists the division in organizing and maintaining McLennan County employee and department training records required by TCOLE and is responsible for ensuring county employees and the department are in compliance with TCOLE standards and mandated training.
  • Coordinate and schedule dates, venues and personnel for department employees
  • Review use of force and provide feedback for the department
  • Maintain a working knowledge of firearms, maintain a shooting skillset required by SWAT, and manipulation of weapons in order to instruct department employees. Must complete the armorer’s course for rifle and pistol as well as the firearms instructor certificate.
  • Maintain an active role and be a contributing member of the McLennan County SWAT Team.
  • Coordinate and manage Jail SRT training, operations, and development
  • Regular attendance and timeliness are required
  • Other duties as assigned by the Training Captain
EDUCATION:
Required:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • State of Texas Law Enforcement Officer Certification (must not be on probationary status for disciplinary reasons)
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:
  • Current and valid Texas driver’s license (Class C) and safe drivingrecord
  • TCOLE Peace Officer License (must not be on probationary status for disciplinary reasons)
  • TCOLE Instructor Certificate
SKILLS ~ EXPERIENCE:

Required:

  • At least one (1) year of experience in law enforcement
  • Must maintain personal loyalty to the Sheriff
  • Ability to locate and establish rapport with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Supervise emergency situations, make effective decisions under stressful situations
  • Exceptional skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
  • Must be able to perform all essential job functions as a Law Enforcement Deputy and Jailer
  • Working knowledge of use of force in both correctional settings and law enforcement functions
  • General knowledge of basic hardware and software and uses of a variety of different computer operating systems such as Microsoft Office Work, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Tyler Technologies

Preferred:

  • At least one (1) year of experience in corrections/detention
  • SRT experience
  • Use of Force experience
DISQUALIFIERS:
  • Undesirable character or reputation
  • A felony conviction or felony deferred adjudication against the laws of this state, another state, or the United States
  • Conviction including court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class B Misdemeanor, or a Class B Misdemeanor within the last ten (10) years.
  • Arrested for DWI or DUI in the past ten (10) years.
  • Currently under indictment for any criminal offense
  • Sold or manufactured any illegal drugs.
  • Conviction, guilty plea, or probation for any family violence offense
  • A dishonorable discharge from any military service/armed forces of the United States

A conviction or deferred adjudication is not an automatic bar to employment. Each case is considered individually.
ENVIRONMENTALFACTORS: Split between indoor/outdoor activity. Significant contact with the public, persons accused or convicted of crimes, law enforcement and courthouse personnel. Work may involve life-threatening situations, extensive local and possible out- of-town driving.
PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS: Intermittent performance of extremely physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, and climbing. May involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. Must be able to exert up to 150 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, such as in the event of chasing and subduing a law violator resisting control. Tasks may also involve standing, sitting, or walking for long periods. Visual perception and discrimination are required, as well as being able to isolate and distinguish critical sounds, possibly under various conditions to include dark or crowded environments. Must be able to pass and maintain the SWAT physical fitness requirements and SWAT firearms qualifications and must maintain an active role and be a contributing member of the McLennan County SWAT Team as assigned by the Training Captain.
HOURS / SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Must be willing to work overtime, weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, evenings and nights. Must be able to work 12 hour shifts
