POSITION DETAILS: 
Non-exempt; full-time; 40 hours per week (varied schedule); full benefits
 

This sworn professional position provides a full range of law enforcement services to Frederick County through community oriented and team management approaches. General supervision is provided through the chain of command; however Deputies must frequently exercise independent judgment and administrative discretion.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Rotating assignments may include vehicle patrol, investigations and testimony, traffic control, prisoner transport, emergency response, court security, search and seizure, civil process, training and guidance of junior officers, community awareness, etc.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. In addition to the duties listed in the Essential Duties section, each employee in this classification may perform the following other duties. QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum age 21 years
  • U.S.A. citizenship
  • High school graduation or the equivalent
  • Current Law Enforcement certification by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) or a comparable certification from a State outside of Maryland
  • Possession of a valid automobile operator's license with the ability to obtain and maintain a Frederick County employee driving permit


KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
 

  • Strong and effective math skills plus spoken and written (English) communication skills, including the ability to accurately complete forms, reports and legal documents associated with assigned duties
  • Ability to hear and understand the speech of motorists, pedestrians and/or citizens, sometimes over the sounds of traffic
  •  Ability to clearly observe vehicle and pedestrian traffic at acceptable distances and to hear warning sounds such as a vehicle horn
  • Ability to effectively apply training to respond quickly, calmly and appropriately in standard duty and emergency situations, demonstrating good judgment and independent action
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public, maintaining professional attitude, appearance and manner of performance

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:
 

  • Sound physical condition in order to effectively respond to the spontaneous physical demands of comprehensive law enforcement duties (e.g. arrest, restraint and control of suspects/prisoners, foot pursuit, search and rescue, etc.); ability to meet and maintain compliance with FCSO physical fitness standards
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is constantly driving; frequently walking, moving, traversing, climbing, ascending, descending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and performing repetitive motions; occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds and pushing up to and over 40 pounds; rarely sitting, crawling, lifting over 50 pounds and pulling up to and over 40 pounds.  
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently indoors, outdoors, and walking on uneven ground; occasionally working in hot (above 100 degrees), cold (below 32 degrees) dirty, dusty, in confined spaces, and will be required to wear protective equipment; rarely work at heights, below ground, in noisy environments, near machinery, near chemical or fumes, and potentially exposed to infectious diseases.  

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION / EXAMINATION PROCESS

 

  • Available for 24-hour call-in, any shift as assigned, weekends, holidays and mandatory overtime
  • This position is subject to random drug testing, to include testing for marijuana
  • A Deputy Sheriff Lateral becomes eligible for the rank of Deputy First Class upon completion of the 18-month probationary.
  • Secondary employment will not be approved for FCSO personnel before successful completion of the field training period
  • Completion of the examination/selection process can take up to 12 months. Candidates found eligible, but not immediately selected, may be contacted for subsequent placement within 1 year
  • Candidates who were previously rejected may reapply for consideration, however those declined for reasons that assure another rejection will not be reconsidered

EXAMINATION PROCESS (may include): (candidate must qualify at each step to proceed to next)
1) An evaluation of training and experience
2) Physical ability testing
3) A spoken examination administered before a panel
4) One or more personal interviews
5) A pre-employment background investigation
6) A pre-employment polygraph test (inquiries include criminal, credit, drug use and personal history)
7) A pre-employment physical examination and drug test, to include testing for marijuana
8) A pre-employment psychological examination
