The Utah Department of Corrections is looking for a Culinary Maintenance Specialist to work in their Salt Lake City, Utah Correctional Facility.

Successful candidates will possess:

  • Skilled experience in the operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration equipment.
  • Experience and knowledge of line voltage electrical circuits.
  • Experience in low voltage controls and troubleshooting electrical controls.
  • Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repair of culinary equipment.
  • Experience with commercial, coolers, freezers, and ice machines. .
  • Experience with appliance repair.
  • Hot Water Heaters
  • Electrical experience
  • Low voltage experience
  • Controls/sequence experience
  • Troubleshooting experience
  • Preventative Maintenance (lubrication)
  • Good Communication Skills
  • Preference will be given to Universal Refrigeration CFC Certified, evacuation, and recharge of refrigeration systems.
  • Skilled in a vocation and able to use related tools and/or equipment proficiently.

Retirement - Utah Retirement Systems (URS):

Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems prior to 7/1/2011 are in the Tier I Public Employees System.

Employees hired on or after 7/1/2011 and who have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System.

  • Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))
  • Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.

Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.

Paid Time Off:
Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).

Annual leave amounts increase with years of service.

We have 12 paid holidays.

  • Performs repairs of the culinary equipment including dishwashers, ovens, coolers, freezers, kettles, mixers, warmers, exhaust hoods, ranges, hot plates, and ice machines. All equipment that makes up a functioning kitchen.
  • Working in the culinary department of the prison, maintaining refrigeration equipment.
  • Coordinates activities with institutional needs and enforces security regulations.
  • Appliance Repair
  • Work with commercial, coolers, freezers, and ice machines, and may help with HVAC equipment outside of the culinary as needed.
  • Designs and/or prepares training/instructional materials, teaching aids, and devices.
  • Teaches others the principles and techniques used in the specific service or trade, adherence to industry and/or safety standards, and maintenance of related equipment, tools, and/or supplies.
  • Provide training and supervision of inmates in Culinary Kitchen Operations at a prison facility to enable them to
    succeed outside of the prison environment.
  • Works in a team effort to help the maintenance or service operations become successful.
  • Uses and operates a variety of hand tools, electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems, make adjustments, and repairs, and/or performs preventative maintenance on equipment, machinery, etc.
  • Repairs, cleans, adjusts, and/or performs preventive maintenance on equipment, tools, machinery, etc.

  • Current UDC employees hourly rate will be determined by the career ladder.
  • Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. working at great heights, working in extreme outdoor weather conditions, working in Correctional Environment.
  • The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas, defending oneself and/or others against physical attack.
