Primary Reason Why Classification Exists
An employee in this class is responsible for attending BLET classes on a daily basis and on the job training with the Lincolnton Police Department. All training completed is in preparation for meeting standards required to become a sworn Law Enforcement Officer for the City of Lincolnton.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class is responsible for attending BLET classes on a daily basis; listening to instruction, participating in physical fitness training, participating in role play scenarios and taking tests. The employee must have a positive attitude and desire to learn through hard work and good study habits. The work is performed under the observation and review of the Training Unit Director and the officer in the Training Unit. This employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement training.
Attending Class on a regular basis
Performing assigned tasks as instructed
Listening to and taking notes during classroom instruction
Participating in role playing scenarios during class
Completing assignments and taking graded tests with passing scores
Care for and maintain departmental equipment
May be assigned non-sworn duties in the Police Department
Support the relationship between the City of Lincolnton and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff
Maintain confidentiality of work-related issues and City information
Performs related work as required
Learn, understand and apply applicable laws, ordinances, policies and procedures.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Work under strict law enforcement structure.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
Meet the public with courtesy and tact.

Learn standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system.
Learn to use a computer and applicable software.
Some knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, practices, and procedures.
Some knowledge of departmental standard operating policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
Some knowledge of practices, materials, techniques, and equipment pertinent to job assignment.
Familiarity and increase in skill in the use of firearms and other authorized law enforcement equipment.
Ability and willingness to act quickly and properly in emergency situations.
Ability and willingness to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, and the general public.
Physical Requirements
Work in this position is medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas or information by voice and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and/or to make fine distinctions in sound. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Employee must demonstrate continual physical fitness to withstand the rigors of law enforcement officer and physical confrontation with assailants and/or foot chases for apprehensions.
Working Conditions
Employee must have the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, operate a computer terminal, and perform extensive reading. This employee is exposed to inside and outside working conditions. This employee may be exposed to noise which would cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level; hazards including proximity to moving equipment; and atmospheric conditions which may affect the respiratory system. Work requires application of safety precautions related to law enforcement activities.
Education and Experience
Graduation from High School or GED Equivalency. College coursework in Criminal Justice, behavioral, or other social science coursework is preferred.
Special Requirements
Valid North Carolina Driver's License
Must be appropriate age to participate in Basic Law Enforcement Training Program
Ability to obtain certification as a law enforcement officer by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Standards Commission after successful training and based on background review.
