Lieutenant - Juvenile Detention Center

Summary

Develops, organizes, supervises and implements activities of a specific shift at the Hays County Juvenile Detention Center. Responsible for the safety and welfare of all youth and staff during assigned shift. Provides guidance and supervision to program staff by performing the following duties.

• Supervises all activities and functions of assigned shift.
• Responsible for organizing staff assignments, monitoring and scheduling activities and tasks necessary to meet youth needs and maintain the safety and security of the Juvenile Detention Center.
• Ensures staff follows posted daily schedule.
• Reviews all submitted reports and documentation to ensure adequate details, accuracy and compliance with established rules, regulations, and policies and procedures.
• Provides feedback to staff concerning their performance and acts as a coach in promoting staff development and improvement.
• Conducts shift briefings and training to identify problems, pass on current information, and improve communications between assigned staff members and other shifts.
• Operates in a professional manner, with effective communications, problem solving, directness and flexibility.
• Responsible for teaching and demonstrating proper attitudes, skills and techniques for Juvenile Supervision Officers.
• Assumes on call status for emergency situations.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the required education and experience and required knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this job may be substituted for each other on a year-for-year basis.
• Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university preferred or high school diploma.
• Two years’ experience working in a correctional facility.
• TJJD certification as a Juvenile Supervision Officer.

• Must be 21 years of age.
• Class C driver’s license.
• First Aid & CPR certification required.
• TJJD-approved Physical Restraint Technique required.
• Must successfully complete all security clearance requirements to include
  

• Criminal History (TCIC/NCIC)
• Sex Offender Registration Database Check
• Driver’s License Check
• Pre-employment Drug Screen
