Description

Carver County is looking for a dynamic RN to join our Sheriff's Office team. The Jail Health Nurse is responsible for providing professional skilled nursing care for inmates and residents of the Carver County Jail and Juvenile Detention Center. Work is performed independently under the combined direction of the contracted Responsible Physician and Sheriff's Administration, written medical protocols, and Sheriff’s Office policies.

Training and experience will be considered when determining the starting rate of pay.

In-person interviews will be held at the Chaska Justice Center on Wednesday, July 2.
  • Provide clinical services and healthcare management services to inmates:
  • Review intake health questionnaires on newly incarcerated inmates;
  • Review inmate medical request slips daily;
  • Identify potential health issues and facilitates medical screening;
  • Perform inmate assessment and treatment at the sick call as required.
  • Review and assess prescribed medications brought in by inmates;
  • Collaborate with primary care providers and other health care providers to ensure continuity, timeliness, and appropriateness of care to inmates;
  • Arrange for additional health care, including appointments for dental, medical, psychological, laboratory and other treatment modes;
  • Check and record vital signs; obtains specimens from inmate patients for diagnostic testing;
  • Coordinate and administer medication and treatment to inmates;
  • Report treatment and medication reactions;
  • Monitor changes in the inmate emotional or physical conditions;
  • Institute communicable disease screening measures as directed;
  • Report suspected communicable diseases and arrange for inmate isolation;
  • Assist physicians, dentists, or other medical personnel with treatment;
  • Prepare medication carts for detention deputy distribution to inmates;
  • Educate inmates and correctional staff regarding medication side effects or symptoms;
  • Maintain all medical records related to health and medical screening and medical treatment administered to inmates while incarcerated;
  • Record all care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format, and on the appropriate forms;
  • Provide inmate patient education and/or discharge planning;
  • Participate in unit and Public Health department-wide meetings and trainings;
  • Successfully complete yearly competency and mandatory training;
  • Respond to and provide prompt assessment and care in emergency situations.
  • Promote an environment that ensures inmates are treated in a professional, ethical, and tactful manner.
  • Performs other position-related duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • Two years of nursing or related experience

  • Associates Degree in Nursing
  • Three years of nursing or related experience
or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job
and
  • Current valid and unrestricted Registered Nursing Licensure in the State of Minnesota
  • Valid Driver’s License
All applications will be screened for minimum qualifications, scored and ranked. The highest ranked candidates meeting minimum qualifications will be recommended for the scored oral examinations (interviews). Top candidates successfully passing the oral interview(s) will be sent to the background process. Conditional offers will be made to those candidates successfully passing the background, with the number of offers being proportionate to the number of vacancies. Final selection for the position will include successful completion of oral interview(s), CJIS background investigation, psychological evaluation, and pre-placement physical.
