Description About the Agency:

The Department of Public Safety and Corrections consists of two main divisions:

Corrections Servicesoversees the custody and care of those serving a prison sentence for a felony conviction.

Community Supervisionoversees the supervision of individuals who are on state probation or parole.

The Secretary, who is appointed by the Governor, serves as the Department’s chief executive officer. The Corrections Services Deputy Secretary, Undersecretary, and Chief of Operations all report directly to the Secretary.

DPS-Office of State Police has three vacancies.No experience or training is required.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age.

Possession of a current driver's license.

Willingness and ability to attain a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.

An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified by the hiring agency until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.The official job specifications for this role, as defined by the State Civil Service, can be found here.

Learns about law enforcement activities designed to impact public safety services.

Learns about crash investigation, traffic and criminal enforcement, defensive tactics, firearms use, and constitutional law.

Learns about how to investigate complaints, write reports, and provide public safety service.

Learns about protocols for emergency response during large scale events, disasters, and other events with statewide impact.

Learns protocol for investigations of criminal complaints.

Trains for certification in emergency vehicle operation, firearms, defense tactics, crash investigation, officer survival, de-escalation, leadership, enforcement of traffic and criminal laws, as well as other pertinent training courses.

Completes DPS Police specific training provided by the Louisiana State Police Training Academy or DPS Police Instructors.

This vacancy is located in the Physical Security Section in the Department of Public Safety and Corrections/Office of State Police located in East Baton Rouge Parish. This posting may be used to fill a probational appointment, job appointment, or promotional opportunity.

As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a DPS Police Cadet, Officer, Sr. Officer, or Corporal, depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant.

This position has a biweekly Special Entrance Rate (SER) as follows:

DPS Police Cadet (PS-108)—$1,616.00

DPS Police Officer (PS-110)—$1,785.60

DPS Police Sr. Officer (PS-111)—$1,910.40

DPS Police Corporal (PS-112)—$2,044.00

Applicants must have a Civil Service test score for 2100–PSE (Protective Services Exam) in order to be considered for this vacancy. If you do not have a score prior to applying to this posting, it may result in your application not being considered.

Applicants who are POST-certified are exempt from taking the 2100–PSE (Protective Services Exam) test in accordance to Civil Service Rule 22.8(e). The applicant’s POST certification shall not be under suspension or pending a revocation hearing.
