The Adult Detention Center is a well-established agency in Prince William County, VA. We provide safety and security for our staff and the individuals in our care while protecting the residents of Prince William County. This position will involve direct contact with inmates housed at the facility.
ABOUT THIS ROLE: As a Registered Nurse specializing in Psychiatric/Mental Health you will play a crucial role in supporting the well-being and mental health of patients. You will be responsible for providing direct care, conducting assessments, administering medications and monitoring patient progress. You will work closely with the rest of our medical team to ensure that each patient receives the best possible care and support.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: (These responsibilities are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
- Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments (Nursing Sick Call) to address both medical conditions and mental health concerns.
- Accurately document assessment findings in the inmate’s medical record, ensuring detailed and legally sound notes.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of both mental health and Nursing, including crisis intervention and chronic illness management.
- Understand and manage TDO (Temporary Detention Order) transfers in accordance with legal and clinical protocols.
- Take and transcribe clinical orders accurately, ensuring continuity of care.
- Administer medications, including psychotropic drugs, and monitor patients for side effects and effectiveness.
- Advocate for patients’ rights and needs, ensuring access to compassionate, equitable healthcare.
- Provide consistent emotional support and encouragement to individuals during their incarceration.
- Collaborate with psychiatrists, therapists, medical providers, and other health professionals to develop and implement coordinated treatment plans.
- Participate in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings as needed to review cases and contribute to care strategies.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prior experience in psychiatric/mental health nursing.
- Knowledge of psychology and mental health disorders.
- Excellent clinical assessment, communication, and documentation skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Resilience, empathy, and a strong sense of professional integrity.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to handle sensitive patient information with confidentiality and professionalism.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working in a secure or correctional setting preferred but not essential.
KNOWLEDGE:
Customer service principles; Medical principles and practices; Medical terminology; Nursing principles and practices; Medication protocols; Modern office procedures and equipment; Recordkeeping principles; Data Entry; Computers and related software applications.
SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS
Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:00pm
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRMENTS:
High school diploma or G.E.D. plus a degree or diploma from a state approved professional nursing program and 1 year of related experience.
SALARY RANGE:
$75,649.60. - $125,014.50 Annually

INCENTIVES:
$5000.00 Hiring Bonus
***Hiring incentives will be paid out in two (2) equal installments. Fifty percent (50%) of the incentive will be paid after ninety (90) days of employment and fifty percent (50%) will be paid following the completion of the probationary period. Probationary employees that voluntarily terminate employment with the County, shall repay the net amount (minus state and federal taxes) of the first bonus installment via a deduction from their annual leave payout and/or remit payment of any remaining balance within thirty (30) days following separation of employment from the County***

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Registered Nurse License: CPR/First Aid Certification. Must pass local, state, and federal background checks and have a valid driver's license.
