Description This position will allow the applicant career development in leadership, supervision, and management skills through critical operational and administrative duties related to the assigned area or unit within the Commerce City Police Department. The successful applicant will be expected to fill this position based on the department's needs as soon as possible. Upon completing the necessary training and mentoring, the applicant will be expected to lead the department as a police sergeant. This applicant will be assigned to the work schedule for the Division or Unit they will be assigned within the Police Department that best fits the department's needs.

1. Must possess a bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited college or university (A moratorium has been placed on this eligibility requirement and does not apply to this announcement).

2. A minimum of five (5) consecutive successful years of experience working as a full-time police officer; and,

3. Two (2) successful years of experience working as a full-time police sergeant for a paid, full-service, local, county, or state law enforcement agency.

4. Possess a valid Colorado Driver’s license Colorado POST Certified

An applicant's performance evaluations must “meet or exceed" expectations for the preceding 24 months.

An applicant will be deemed ineligible if they are currently on a performance improvement plan or have received Major Discipline, as defined in the FOP Collective Bargaining Agreement, within 24 months preceding this notice’s date. Major discipline is calculated from the date the investigation was initiated.

An applicant will be deemed ineligible and will be disqualified from the process based on the following criteria:

  • Applicant has a felony conviction
  • Applicant received a Court-Martial for a crime that is the equivalent of a felony under state or federal law, or received a Dishonorable or Less than Honorable Discharge from the U.S. military
  • Applicant has a conviction from a crime that prevents applicant’s ability to retain their Colorado POST certification as a peace officer.
  • Applicant has legally or illegally possessed or consumed marijuana, or any of its derivatives in any form, in the last twelve (12) months
  • Applicant’s driver’s license has been revoked or suspended in the last twelve (12) months
  • Applicant’s driver’s license has been revoked or suspended two (2) or more times in the last five (5) years
  • Applicant has illegally sold, manufactured or distributed any controlled substance, prescription drug, steroid or marijuana, or any of its derivatives in any form, in the last ten (10) years
  • Applicant has a conviction or deferred judgement for an alcohol-related driving offense in the last five (5) years
  • Applicant has two (2) or more convictions or deferred judgements for an alcohol-related driving offense in the last seven (7) years
  • Applicant has had a conviction or deferred judgement for hit and run, or failure to remain at the scene of an accident in the last five (5) years

  • Driving: Drives a city or personal vehicle in the normal course of business
  • Office Equipment: Daily use of computer, keyboard, copier, scanner, printer, calculator, phone (desk and cell). Daily use of software programs including Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Word, Excel; mobile data terminal (MDT), radios, personal information systems, file maintenance programs
  • Other Equipment: Must be able to wear/use personal protective equipment (PPE), firearms, restraint devices, handcuffs, batons, radar units, first aid equipment, crime scene technician kits, blood kits, drug test kits, two-way radios
  • Physical Activities: High physical activity that may include walking, sitting, standing, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and carrying
  • Lifting: Frequently lifts, carries, and exerts up to 88 pounds. Must be able to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 35 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects
  • Vision and Hearing: Must have visual acuity to see and read paper and electronic documents. Must be able to communicate via telephone and two-way radio, communicate conversation, respond to verbal inquires and provide verbal directives. Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color
  • Exposure to Environmental Conditions: Will be exposed to heat, cold, odors, toxic agents, noise, vibrations, smoke, wetness, humidity, dusts, disease, weapons, explosives, bodily fluids, intense light, electrical currents, or violence. Frequent contact with weapons, firearms, syringes, drugs; bloody materials and other biohazards; graphic photos and videos; odors; and chemicals
  • Schedule: Position generally works a non-traditional work week. Will be required to be available for over-time, off duty and/or on-call duty
  • Additional Working Conditions: Will be exposed to work settings that vary in convenience and comfort. Will be required to visit external, non-city work sites with the city having limited control over the work environment
