The Town of Castle Rock Police Department is accepting applications to fill current vacancies as well as to establish an eligibility pool. Under general supervision of a Police Sergeant, the purpose of the position is to protect the lives, safety, health, welfare, and property of the Town's citizens. Employees in this classification perform technical and professional level work. This position is responsible for enforcing municipal, state and federal ordinances, statutes, and laws; and investigating and processing crime scenes; discovering, deterring and preventing crime; apprehending criminals; and working with the community. Located on Colorado’s front range, Castle Rock is the seat of Douglas County and was named one of CNN Money Magazine’s Best Places to Live. The Town has spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains, encompasses some 33 square miles, and is home to about 78,000 residents. The Town of Castle Rock Police Department is currently recruiting for highly motivated individuals with exceptional customer service skills who are interested in becoming a Police Officer with a premiere Colorado department.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Patrols assigned areas within the Town to deter and detect illegal activities and to protect and preserve the safety and security of individuals and property; renders assistance to citizens as needed
- Responds to dispatch calls and investigates citizen complaints and reported incidents, including crimes in progress, crimes discovered after the fact, disturbances, accidents, etc.
- Makes arrests and takes suspects into custody, including the reading of rights, search, booking and transport of individuals
- Performs preliminary investigations at crime scenes, traffic accident scenes and disturbances. Preserve and/or collect physical evidence, diagram or photograph scenes, obtain statements, and conduct interviews necessary for the reporting of circumstances and facts, for charging suspects, and for necessary follow-up
- Conducts traffic enforcement. Responds to and investigates traffic accidents. May establish traffic surveillance to observe and apprehend violators or traffic ordinances and statutes
- Enforces criminal and municipal statutes and ordinances by issuing summonses, making arrests, taking into custody, and giving verbal or written warnings
- Interacts with citizens to identify and resolve issues of concern
- Prepares a variety of written reports and records on incidents and violations of the law; including criminal, traffic, and informational reports
- Prepares arrest warrant affidavits, and search warrants. Prepares charges to be submitted to the District Attorney's office and courts
- Appears in municipal, state, and federal courts and testifies as arresting officer or witness as required on matters related to criminal and civil actions
- Attends and participates in briefings, prescribed courses of physical training, classroom instruction, and field exercises
- Serves subpoenas and assists the courts with court security
- Responds to medical emergencies. Performs CPR and first aid and assists the fire department as needed
- Confers with the District Attorney staff and assists other law enforcement agencies as needed or required, in the investigation of criminal cases and preparation of criminal charges
- Inspects and maintains police related equipment, facilities and uniform for use and appearance
- Performs public safety functions at special events and incidents that attract crowds
- May perform special assignments such as serving as member of Emergency Response Team or providing instruction to fellow officers on a variety of law enforcement skills
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet the following qualifications:
- Current Colorado state P.O.S.T. certification; or similarly qualified as a Police Officer in another state or Federal jurisdiction and eligible for a Colorado Provisional Certification is required; Applicants without P.O.S.T. certification may be considered for employment, to be sponsored by the Town of Castle Rock to attend an academy to attain P.O.S.T. certification.
- High School Diploma or GED; College coursework or degree preferred
- Valid Colorado driver’s license; or ability to attain within 30 days of employment
- Must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check, physical exam, polygraph and psychological exam prior to commencing employment
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of federal laws, state statutes, and local ordinances
- Considerable knowledge of laws of search and seizure
- Considerable knowledge of crime prevention techniques
- Considerable knowledge of principles and techniques employed in crime scene investigation
- Considerable knowledge of principles and techniques employed in accident investigations
- Considerable knowledge of First Responder and CPR
- Considerable knowledge of report and record maintenance principles and practices
- Skill in the care and safe operation of firearms
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products
- Skill in the operation of motorized vehicles under adverse conditions
- Skill in exhibiting excellent customer service skills
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively with superiors, coworkers and the general public
- Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and to determine proper courses of action within the established framework of policies and procedures
- Ability to learn the geography of the Town and surrounding areas
- Ability to maintain composure under emergency situations and to work effectively when confronted with emotional suspects, victims and witnesses
- Ability to exercise discretion
- Ability to work well with others and independently without direct supervision
- Ability to use force to control others including the use of firearms
- Ability to physically access all sites within assigned patrol area to perform duties, potentially in any weather and environmental conditions; May include exertion of heavy physical effort to include lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of 100 pounds or more
- Ability to make visual perceptions and discriminations and to perceive and discriminate sounds, odors, depths and textures

Written test to be administered the morning of Saturday, October 26, 2024. Out-of-State applicants should expect to be available for an oral board examination that same afternoon. Candidates invited to test will receive additional details about the examination process.
