The Marana Police Department is comprised of 150 full time team members (117 commissioned officers and 33 civilians) and nearly 50 volunteers, providing safety and security to nearly 50,000 residents over 127 square miles. Hiring Rate:
$30.0843/hour ($62,575.42/year)

  • Patrol assigned areas; enforce state and local laws and ordinances; maintain a community presence and/or respond to calls for service
  • Respond to calls related to the protection of life and property, traffic incidents, and other public safety emergencies
  • Respond to calls to include domestic disturbances, burglaries, health and welfare assists, business and residential alarms, thefts, civil protection orders, bomb threats, hazardous material spills and other public safety incidents
  • Determine the existence of probable cause; identify and take suspects and offenders into physical custody, issue citations, or refer charges for review and prosecution
  • Prepare reports of arrests made, activities performed and unusual incidents observed
  • Complete reports in a timely manner; conduct investigations, verbally interact with witnesses, victims, suspects and offenders to obtain information
  • Perform all work duties and assignments in accordance with the Town and Department policies and procedures.

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO:

  • Acquire through training, knowledge of modern approved principles, practices and procedures of police work, state laws, city ordinances, first aid and the geography of the Town
  • Read and interpret complex technical documents in English, prepare accurate and grammatically correct written reports
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Analyze problems and have the potential to rationally and calmly take effective action in emergency and stressful situations
  • Observe accurately and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents and places, and judge situations and people accurately
  • Achieve proficiency in self-defense techniques and the use and care of firearms
  • Show initiative, alertness, integrity and reliability
  • Learn standard operating procedures of a police radio and be proficient in the use of computers
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with team members in the organization and deal courteously but firmly with the general public
  • Undergo strenuous physical conditioning
  • Non-certified applicants must attend a police academy.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at time of graduation from academy.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must possess a valid Arizona Driver License at the time of hire.
  • Must meet all requirements for admission to a basic Police Academy recognized by AZ POST

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be in compliance with the Marana Police Department’s tattoo policy.
    • Members are prohibited from having tattoos or brands anywhere on the body that advocate or represent criminal organizations, illegal activity, or sexual, racial, or religious discrimination. Members are prohibited from having tattoos or brands anywhere on their arms or legs that are obscene and could foreseeably be exposed while on duty. Members are prohibited from having tattoos or brands above the collarbone or below the wrist, with the exception of a single, plain ring tattoo on either hand.

Testing:
Candidates that are determined to have met the minimum requirements as listed on the job posting will be invited to test. Please monitor your email/junk mail for these notifications.

Physical fitness testing is scheduled for June 28th, 2025. This is the only date available to test. No retests will be given for this process.

Physical Agility Test:
Based upon the Cooper's Standards of Physical Fitness according to gender and age. Candidates will be tested on:

  • One-minute full body push-ups
  • One-minute sit-ups
  • 1.5-mile run
Please be advised that you must meet the 30th percentile of each portion of the physical agility test listed above. These standards are listed below by age and gender.

YOU MUST MEET MINIMUM STANDARDS IN ALL THREE AREAS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR ADVANCEMENT IN THE HIRING PROCESS.

Written Exam:
The written exam portion of this process will be conducted remotely. The candidate will be provided with a link to take the test. The written exam is designed for an entry level peace officer position requiring no prior law enforcement experience. Police Recruit candidates must pass this exam to proceed further in the selection process.

Oral Board Interview/Chief's Interview:
Candidates that pass the testing process may be invited to an oral board interview. Oral board interviews are tentatively scheduled for July 16th, 2025 (if a second day is needed, oral boards will also be held on July 17th, 2025). Candidates that are selected to move forward will then be invited to the Chief’s interview. Chief of Police interviews are tentatively scheduled for July 22nd, 2025 (if a second day is needed, Chief of Police interviews will also be held on July 23rd, 2025).

Background Investigation:
A thorough background investigation will be conducted on candidates who are being considered for employment. This investigation will be based upon information supplied by the candidate and will include a polygraph examination. You must be aware that sensitive or confidential aspects of your personal life will be explored.

Depending on information provided during the hiring process, an investigator may contact you at any time for clarifying information. Absolute honesty is expected and required throughout the entire hiring process.

Conditional Job Offer:
Finalists that pass the background investigation will be given a conditional job offer contingent upon passing a psychological exam, drug screen and medical exam.

Based on positions available, the Police Department may place finalists on an eligibility list to fill future vacancies. These lists have no set expiration date. The Police Department can choose to exhaust the list at any time depending on the needs of the department.
