The Alameda Belt Line Railroad Police Department (ABL Police) is seeking qualified, experienced Lateral Entry Police Officers with a proven background in criminal investigations to join our growing public safety team. ABL Police Officers provide specialized law enforcement and security services across railroad operations along the Alameda Corridor and associated properties, ensuring the protection of people, property, and cargo vital to national commerce.

This is a unique opportunity for a seasoned investigator to apply their skills within a commissioned railroad police agency, where proactive casework, interagency collaboration, and critical infrastructure protection intersect. Railroad police officers have full peace officer authority under Penal Code Section 830.33 in the State of California. They have additional Federal authority under 49 CFR §207.

Examples of Duties

  • Conduct and coordinate criminal investigations related to theft, fraud, trespassing, vandalism, cargo crimes, and other offenses within ABL jurisdiction.
  • Perform surveillance, evidence collection, and report preparation in accordance with professional standards.
  • Collaborate with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies on joint investigations and task force operations.
  • Patrol rail corridors, yards, and facilities to ensure compliance with laws and company regulations.
  • Prepare detailed investigative reports and provide testimony in court or administrative hearings.
  • Serve as a liaison between ABL management and external law enforcement partners on matters of security and investigations.
  • Utilize advanced investigative tools and databases to identify suspects, trends, and organized criminal activity affecting rail operations.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Current or recent employment as a full-time peace officer with a California POST-participating agency.
  • Possession of a California POST Basic Certificate or higher (Intermediate/Advanced preferred).
  • Minimum of five (5) years of law enforcement experience, with at least two (2) years of investigative assignments (e.g., detectives, special investigations, major crimes, cargo theft, narcotics, or similar).
  • Demonstrated experience conducting complex investigations, writing detailed reports, and coordinating with other agencies.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid California Driver’s License.
  • Must be eligible for commissioning under state railroad police authority (CA Penal Code 830.33).
  • Must pass a CA POST background investigation, psychological evaluation, and medical examination.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience in cargo theft, rail-related crimes, or critical infrastructure protection.
  • Familiarity with port, maritime, or transportation security environments.
  • POST Intermediate or Advanced Certificates.
  • Prior participation in regional or federal task forces.
  • College Degree.
